Common Orlando roof rats can be dark brown or black. They can grow to between 13 and 18 inches in length from nose to tail. Roof rats can weigh 5-9 ounces. They have very large ears and very little hair. You may have a roof rat problem if you notice long/cylindrical droppings in your attic or crawlspace.
Central Florida roof rats can nest inside or outside of homes. Outside, they often live in trees, woodpiles or in bushes. Inside the home, roof rats get their name because they take up residence in the attic or ceiling, preferring the warmth and softness provided by attic insulation.
Roof rats are known as omnivores for their food preference which means they will eat either meat or vegetation, but they prefer a vegetarian diet. They can be attracted to fruit, nuts, seeds, vegetables sometimes even tree bark. So fruit trees, common to the Orlando and Central Florida area can attract rats.
In addition to humans, roof rats have many natural enemies including, dogs, cats, snakes, birds of prey and other rats. Often a home snake infestation may be a sign your home has been invaded by roof rats.
Besides the mess and the nuisance rats can be a danger because they can spread disease. If they get into food they can spread diseases with their feces or urine. They can also bite, spreading infection. Fleas that live on rats can transfer disease to humans and other animals when they bite.
