With fall quickly approaching and the temperatures beginning to drop, pesky critters like mice will start looking for places to nest for the winter. Unfortunately for many of us, that means rats trying their best to make their way into our walls for shelter. While an important part of our ecosystem, rats have no place inside a person’s home. Prevention is the best way to ensure that a rat infestation never becomes an issue.
At Critter Control® of Orlando, we offer a full range of animal exclusion services, but keeping rats out is simple enough for many homeowners to tackle on their own. We recommend starting with the following:
- Inspect the outside of your home. Look for cracks, gaps, or holes in your foundation, walls, or roof that is ¼” or larger. Rats can squeeze through tiny openings, so it’s important to have these addressed.
- Inspect doors, door frames, and window frames for gaps or openings. Just the same as the last step, if the opening is ¼” or bigger, it should be repaired by you or a trained professional like those here at Critter Control®.
- Check ventilation ducts and utility entry points. Rats have been known to enter homes through air conditioning and dryer ducts, so sealing them with a metal mesh screen is a perfect solution.
- Eliminate sources of food and water. Rats want three things when they come to your home: Food, water, and shelter. Denying two of these things makes your home much less desirable to them. Bring in bird feeders, pet bowls, and fix leaky garden hoses to help keep rats at bay.
Taking measures to prevent rat issues now, will go a long way to preventing rats from infiltrating your home’s attic and walls. If DIY isn’t your style, our team of professionals is trained in all methods of animal exclusion. Give us a call today at 407.295.7194 with any questions.
